Fanafikile Lephakha was born and raised in the rural area of Phuthaditjhaba in the Free State, South Africa. Despite the challenges he faced growing up, Lephakha emerged as a symbol of strength and perseverance. He made history as the first black South African to row across the Atlantic Ocean.

Pursuing a Passion for Personal Development

After obtaining a degree in chemical engineering from the University of Johannesburg, Lephakha secured a job at a South African brewery. However, he soon realized that his true passion lay in becoming a life coach. Seeking an adventure that would test his abilities, he applied to participate in a 5,500 km rowing expedition across the Atlantic in 45 days, led by world-renowned explorer Riaan Manser.

Overcoming Adversity and Finding Resilience

The journey across the Atlantic subjected Lephakha to various challenges, including near-death experiences, physical fatigue, and emotional turmoil. Through these hardships, he developed a resilient spirit and learned to confront his emotions head-on. Inspired by his personal struggles, Lephakha sought to help others confront their insecurities and childhood traumas.

Mind Refinery: Empowering South African Men

Recognizing a gap in South Africa’s outreach programs for men, Lephakha created a program called Mind Refinery. This program encourages men to express their emotions and confront their past experiences. Lephakha aims to challenge the traditional belief that “indoda ayikhali” (a man doesn’t cry), teaching men that showing emotion does not signify weakness. He hopes to reach young boys throughout the country and transform Mind Refinery into an academy.

A Force for Positive Change

Lephakha’s unconventional approach to emotional healing often involves leading hikes across the Drakensberg Mountains in KwaZulu-Natal. There, men learn to face their traumas head-on in a supportive environment. His determination and passion for helping others have made him a force for positive change in South African society.

Emphasizing the Power of Pursuing One’s Dreams

In addition to his work as a life coach and mentor, Lephakha uses his own experiences as a testament to the power of following one’s passion. He encourages young people to pursue their dreams, emphasizing that with dedication and determination, anything is possible.

A Legacy of Hope and Resilience

Fanafikile Lephakha’s extraordinary story of overcoming adversity and personal growth has made him an inspiration to many. His unwavering commitment to empowering South African men and breaking down societal barriers showcases the remarkable impact one individual can have on the lives of others. Through his work, Lephakha continues to transform and uplift the communities around him, creating a legacy of hope and resilience.
