The Group of 77 (G77) + China Summit is a highly anticipated event that will take place in Havana, Cuba from September 15-16, 2023. The largest intergovernmental organization of developing countries within the United Nations, the G77 + China focuses on collective economic interests and enhancing joint negotiation capabilities on major international economic issues.

The Summit’s Theme

The 2023 Summit’s theme is “Current Development Challenges: The Role of Science, Technology, and Innovation.” The Summit aims to foster dialogue and analysis of the main challenges facing the global South while laying the foundation for positions and interests the Group will defend in various negotiation processes.

South Africa’s Participation

South Africa, represented by Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Dr. Naledi Pandor, is expected to play a significant role in the discussions. The nation believes Science and Technology are crucial for advancing socio-economic development in the global South and restoring dignity to marginalized communities affected by poverty and inequality.

The Summit’s Objectives

The Summit aims to harness the potential of Science, Technology, and Innovation and transform them into practical solutions that address current development challenges, such as poverty, inequality, and climate change. The event will conclude with the presentation and adoption of the Final Havana Declaration.

The G77’s Role

Established on June 15, 1964, the G77 comprises 134 Member States and is committed to promoting South-South cooperation for development. The upcoming Summit offers an opportunity for these developing nations to strengthen their collective voice on the global stage and to work towards increased cooperation in the areas of Science, Technology, and Innovation.
