In July 2023, the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal saw a remarkable decrease in crime due to the success of its ongoing high-density police operations, including Operation Shanela. The operations resulted in the apprehension of almost 9,000 suspects, and the recovery of 332 firearms through various police activities, including day-to-day patrols and vehicle checkpoints.
Firearms Recovery
Out of the 332 firearms recovered, 273 were handguns, 25 were rifles, 17 were shotguns, and 17 were homemade firearms. Routine policing was responsible for the seizure of 231 firearms, while Operation Shanela led to the recovery of 101 guns. The initiative also led to the arrest of 3,334 individuals for a variety of criminal activities.
Types of Crimes
Of the arrested individuals, 2,482 were charged with contact crimes such as murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, carjackings, business and house robberies, rape, and other sexual offenses. To combat the increasing cases of kidnapping, the police arrested 42 individuals for this crime. In addition, 251 culprits were apprehended for burglary at residential places.
Alcohol and Domestic Violence
To address the contribution of alcohol to crime, the police conducted well-coordinated shebeen raids, resulting in the arrest of 515 individuals for illegal liquor dealing. Additionally, they arrested 189 individuals for Domestic Violence Act violations.
Drug-Related Crimes
Through their proactive approach, the police arrested 1,532 suspects for drug-related crimes. They also recovered 17 petrol bombs, 543 knives, and 24 machetes. In addition, they retrieved 251 vehicles that were stolen or hijacked.
Stock Theft
On the stock theft front, KwaZulu-Natal police made considerable progress, recovering 26 cattle, 16 goats, and four sheep during these operations.
