Human Settlements Department’s Priorities for 2023/24 Budget Vote: A Comprehensive Overview

The Human Settlements Department, led by Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi and Deputy Minister Pam Tshwete, will present their key priorities and performance highlights for the 2023/2024 Budget Vote on May 10th, 2023. This event is crucial following recent policy changes, such as the Emergency Housing Programme, which aims to improve the department’s ability to respond effectively and promptly to disasters, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for South African citizens.

The Budget Vote

The Budget Vote speech will take place from 15:00 to 17:00 in the M46 Marks Building, Parliament. Live streaming will be available on the Department of Human Settlements and Parliament’s social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube, for those who cannot attend in person. This event will provide an opportunity for stakeholders, the media, and the public to hear about the department’s plans and accomplishments in addressing housing issues, as well as its future objectives.

Roundtable Discussion on Affordable and Social Housing

Following the Budget Vote, Minister Kubayi will lead a roundtable discussion on affordable and social housing. This discussion will set the stage for a series of engagements in Cape Town, including project launches and community dialogues, aimed at fostering an inclusive and sustainable society for all citizens. The roundtable will take place later that day at 18:00 in the Banquet Hall, City of Cape Town Council Chambers.

Launch of Maitland Mews Social Housing Project

On May 11th, the Maitland Mews Social Housing project will be launched with the handover of units to tenants, showcasing the department’s commitment to providing affordable housing solutions. The event will be held at the Maitland Social Housing Project in Maitland, starting at 08:30. This project serves as an example of the department’s ongoing efforts to address the housing needs of South Africans, particularly those in low-income brackets.

Community Imbizo

Lastly, a community Imbizo involving the residents of 16/19 informal settlements is scheduled for May 12th at the Tusong Multi-Purpose Centre, Khayelitsha, beginning at 09:00. This event will allow community members to engage with the department and voice their concerns and suggestions regarding housing issues. It underscores the department’s dedication to involving communities in the decision-making process and working together to address problems related to housing and living conditions.

Media Interviews

Both the Minister and Deputy Minister of Human Settlements will be available for media interviews. Members of the media interested in attending should confirm their presence with Isaac Skhosana.
