Kylie Rossouw is a South African teenager diagnosed with arteriovenous malformation (AVM) at the age of 15. After choosing a risky surgery to treat her condition, she woke up from a two-day coma with paralysis on the left side of her body. Despite setbacks, Kylie has shown incredible resilience and has set her sights on becoming a neuropsychologist. Her family has launched a crowdfunding campaign to help cover mounting medical expenses.

Chapter 1: Confronting a Life-altering Diagnosis

In the prime of her youth, South African teenager Kylie Rossouw received news that would forever change the trajectory of her life. An academically inclined individual with an aspiration to delve into the complex world of neurosurgery, her journey was abruptly interrupted at the age of 15. Kylie was diagnosed with arteriovenous malformation (AVM), a severe condition disrupting the normal flow of blood in the brain. This medical crisis threatened her very existence and cast a shadow over her future dreams.

The diagnosis demanded a difficult choice – either a perilous surgery with a mere 4% risk of complications or a life cloaked in perpetual uncertainty. Bravely, Kylie chose to face the risks head-on. But her journey towards reclaiming her disrupted life was far from easy. On March 7, 2022, as she was taken into the operating theater, her life took an unexpected turn. Unanticipated complications resulted in an intraoperative haemorrhage, pushing Kylie into a two-day medically induced coma. This unforeseen crisis plunged her parents, Angelique and Tertius, into an overwhelming pool of fear and worry.

Awakening from the coma, Kylie confronted her altered reality with remarkable resilience. Paralysis had claimed the left side of her body, stripping it of its agility and responsiveness. The dream of navigating the intricate structure of the human brain appeared to be hanging by a thread. Despite the dire circumstances, Tertius remained steadfast in his faith in Kylie’s recovery, asserting, “She will get better; she is my daughter. I will keep on pushing her to get better.”

Chapter 2: The Resilient Road to Recovery

Kylie’s path to recuperation was strewn with obstacles and setbacks; nonetheless, she persisted. Her three-week hospital stay was followed by a five-week stint at a rehabilitation center in Pretoria. Kylie triumphed over physical and emotional hurdles and achieved a significant milestone – walking without assistance upon her discharge on April 29, 2022.

The decision to temporarily withdraw from school was a tough call for an academically driven Kylie. Her dream of becoming a neurosurgeon evolved and adapted, shaped by her personal experiences. Now, she aspires to delve into Neuropsychology post high school, a decision mirroring her unyielding spirit.

Despite her progress, Kylie and her family are presently grappling with a new hurdle – mounting medical bills. The family’s medical aid provider has proven hesitant to cover vital costs, erecting a financial barrier that could hinder Kylie’s progress. As a response, the Rossouw family launched a BackaBuddy crowdfunding campaign on April 19, 2022, aiming to raise funds for essential therapies and medical expenses.

Chapter 3: A Show of Support and Unyielding Determination

In line with Kylie’s spirit of perseverance, the crowdfunding campaign has managed to gather over R96,000 towards the R150,000 goal. This is a clear indication of the immense support from the family, friends, and an expanding network of supporters. Expressing her gratitude, Kylie shared, “Thank you to all the donors who donated to my BackaBuddy campaign. Your belief in me has given me renewed hope and motivation to keep pushing forward.”

The strength and resilience Kylie has demonstrated throughout her journey are nothing short of extraordinary. Her parents count it as a blessing to raise a child with such courage and determination, reflecting the immense pride they harbor for their daughter.

Airbnb brings in lots of money and jobs, and even if all Airbnbs disappeared, it wouldn’t fix the big housing shortage.
