Lusikisiki Men’s Engagement Session: A Step Towards Eradicating Gender-Based Violence

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has organized a Men’s Engagement Session to take place in Lusikisiki, Eastern Cape Province, on August 19, 2023. The aim of the session is to address the high rate of crimes committed against women and children, including sexual assaults, rape cases, and other forms of gender-based violence in the area.

Responding to Community Concerns

The decision to hold the Men’s Engagement Session is in response to a community imbizo held on July 12, 2023. During the imbizo, concerns were raised about the abuse faced by women at the hands of men in the region, and the inadequate response of law enforcement agencies.

Bringing Together Stakeholders

The National Commissioner for Correctional Services, Mr. Makgothi Samuel Thobakgale, made a commitment to address men in the Lusikisiki area. This Men’s Engagement Session is a concrete step towards fulfilling that commitment by bringing together various stakeholders, including the National House of Traditional and Khoi San Leaders, the National Prosecuting Authority, South African Police Service, Department of Social Development, and Heads of Initiation Schools, among others.

The Men’s Engagement Session will take place at the Assemblies of God in Lusikisiki, starting at 9 am. Members of the media have been invited to attend and cover the event to ensure transparency and increase public awareness of the initiative.
