The North West Provincial Legislature is hosting an oversight week in various municipalities under Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality from August 29th to September 1st, 2023. The aim of the program is to promote accountability and transparency in government, strengthen oversight, and encourage public participation.
Throughout the program, Members of the Provincial Legislature will engage with different provincial departments and their MECs, Mayors, Accounting Officers, and members of the Municipal Public Accounts Committees. The meetings will focus on various areas, including economic development, environment and tourism, agriculture and rural development, public works, roads, and community safety and transport management.
The Portfolio Committee on Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, Agriculture and Rural Development will adopt a public hearing report on the National Veld and Forest Fire Bill [B24B-2021]. Several committees will conduct oversight visits to various development projects, such as upgrading roads, housing projects, water supply infrastructure, libraries, and cultural facilities.
The oversight week highlights the legislature’s commitment to ensuring government projects meet the needs of the communities they serve. By actively engaging with provincial departments, local municipalities, and community members, these oversight activities will help foster a sense of accountability and encourage further cooperation among stakeholders.
By emphasizing public participation and providing a platform for community voices to be heard, the North West Provincial Legislature seeks to create a more equitable, inclusive, and transparent government. It is with programs like this that the legislature can work towards creating a sustainable and prosperous future for the residents of the Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District and beyond.
The four-day oversight week is a testament to the dedication of the North West Provincial Legislature to address the challenges faced by local communities and bolster public confidence in government processes. Through these oversight activities, the legislature will be better equipped to make informed decisions, shape policy, and allocate resources in a manner that best serves the citizens of the province. Members of the media interested in attending the meetings should contact Namhla Luhabe, Deputy Manager of Communications for the North West Provincial Legislature.
