Protea Heights Academy’s Solar Project: A Beacon of Sustainability and Innovation

sustainability education

Protea Heights Academy (PHA) in Brackenfell, South Africa, is a leading example of environmental stewardship in the education sector. Since 2019, the school’s solar installation has prevented the emission of nearly 250 tonnes of carbon dioxide and generated over 200,000 kWh of clean energy. By installing an additional 144 solar panels, PHA is further boosting the school’s sustainable practices and reducing its reliance on carbon-intensive energy sources.

Encouraging Innovative Thinking Among Students

PHA is a math and science-centered institution that encourages innovative thinking among its students. Principal Andrea Coetzer emphasizes this ethos, stating, “For one school to reduce the carbon footprint that much, that is a lot. The concept has created awareness among our learners and school community about climate change and the importance [of combating] it.”

Collaboration with Sun Exchange

The solar project’s success is attributed to a fruitful collaboration with Sun Exchange, a Cape Town-based solar energy company. Their platform enables solar cell owners to earn a modest income during the project’s lifespan, allowing for the first phase of PHA’s project to be fully funded by 119 members who purchased 34.17 kW of solar cells.

Sustainable Energy Development and Engaging Learning Experience

This initiative not only supports sustainable energy development but also provides an engaging learning experience for students. Coetzer further highlights the importance of teaching future generations about environmental stewardship, stating, “It is our mission to show the community that you can make a huge difference by reducing your carbon footprint. Even if your contribution is small, it goes a long way for the environment.”

Second Phase of the Project

As the school prepares to enter the second phase of the project, they also plan to install an 80 kWh battery system to store energy for use during load shedding. This addition will ensure an uninterrupted learning experience for students and further solidify PHA’s commitment to sustainability.

The second phase of the project has currently reached 46.5% of its funding goal, with 304 people having already invested. Coetzer urges others to support the project, saying, “At the same price a pizza costs you, you can make a difference in the world.”

A Beacon of Innovation

Protea Heights Academy’s solar project serves as an inspiration for educational institutions worldwide to embrace sustainability and foster creative problem-solving among students. The school’s dedication to sustainability and environmental education will no doubt inspire future generations to continue the fight against climate change and work towards a more sustainable future.

In a time where clean energy solutions are more crucial than ever, Protea Heights Academy stands out as a beacon of innovation. Through collaboration with Sun Exchange and the support of the community, PHA demonstrates that even small contributions can make a significant impact on the environment.
