Highlights of the Seminar

The seminar saw over 400 participants daily, with several captivating presentations exploring various aspects of modern library services. Some of the highlights included:

  1. Kurwin Brinkhuys, Adult Librarian at Bellville Library, discussed the challenges and opportunities presented by the digital shift in public libraries. He explored the ways in which libraries are harnessing technology to better serve their communities.

  2. Shadwell Clint Overmeyer, Assistant Librarian at Valhalla Park Library, introduced the Valhalla Park Library Shelf Warriors—an outreach program designed to engage children in the community, encouraging them to visit the library and participate in a book club.

  3. Lonwabo Joseph Mabele, Reference Librarian at Brackenfell Library, explored the potential of WhatsApp Business as a tool for providing reference services to youth in South African libraries. He discussed the limitations faced by libraries in serving young patrons, such as limited resources and adapting to user needs, and proposed WhatsApp as a viable solution to address these challenges.

Recognition of Library Staff

Councillor Patricia van der Ross, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, praised the efforts of the city’s librarians, referring to them as innovators who effectively leverage technology and devise novel ways to encourage young patrons to visit the library and delve into the wealth of knowledge housed within these institutions.
