‘Sexuality’ has been a taboo topic for a long time, making it difficult for many people to discuss it openly. However, a new documentary series called ‘Sex and Pleasure’ on Showmax aims to change that by providing an open-minded and non-judgmental approach to exploring taboo topics surrounding human sexuality in South Africa.
Hosted by Kim Windvogel and Romantha Botha, the series offers a unique and empowering perspective on sex and pleasure in South Africa. It seeks to educate viewers on a diverse range of themes related to sex and pleasure, including sex work, drugs, disability, spirituality, love, and parenting.
Produced by IdeaCandy, the series explores both controversial and conventional themes related to sex and pleasure. It features interviews with OnlyFans creators, exotic dancers, and couples discussing various topics such as choking. Additionally, it showcases familiar faces such as actor Siv Ngesi and Artscape CEO Marlene le Roux, a disability and women’s rights activist.
Sex education is another important topic that the series touches upon. Many interviewees discuss the lack of communication about sex in their families and how this led them to seek out information from other sources such as magazines, porn, books, TV, and even graffiti. The show reminds viewers that if parents don’t talk to their children about sex, someone or something else will.
Each episode of the series offers a thought-provoking exploration of a different aspect of human sexuality and features a diverse range of South Africans talking openly about their experiences. The documentary series challenges traditional views on sexuality, explores controversial topics, and reminds us of the importance of sex education.
The documentary series is co-written and conceptualized by Windvogel and Botha, with director Ayanda Duma. The aim of the show is to invite the whole country, from conservative to highly liberal, to take part in an adult conversation that hasn’t been possible until now. The trailer also features appearances from Moonchild Sanelly, sexperts like Dr Tlaleng Mofokeng and Dr Mpume Zenda, and publisher Ingrid Jones.
The first episode of the series, which premieres on Showmax on 8 March 2023, focuses on sex work, in all its forms, including slay queens. Among the interviewees are author Jackie Phamotse, public attorney Sanja Bornman, and Moonlight, a Master’s graduate who founded a phone sex academy. The interviewees discuss the various aspects of sex work, such as talking dirty in Zulu, race play and age play, Christmas-themed porn, family reactions, and the power dynamics of sex work. They also question why the transactional nature of sex is still a crime in South Africa.
‘Sex and Pleasure’ is a groundbreaking documentary series that offers a valuable resource for everyone. Whether you’re a South African looking to explore your own sexuality or simply curious about the topic, ‘Sex and Pleasure’ is a must-watch.
