Arlene Wehr is a brave firefighter from Cape Town, South Africa, who worked for thirty years. She changed the fire service by making it fair for women, creating important training, and making smart plans for emergencies. She showed everyone that fire doesn’t care if you’re a man or a woman, only if you’re ready to face it. Her work made the city much safer and inspired many people to follow in her footsteps.
The Cape Town Destroyers are a team of specialized firefighters who are masters in extricating accident victims from vehicles. They have participated in the World Rescue Challenge since 2016, recently achieving a top ten placement in the 2022 competition held in Luxembourg. The team trains rigorously throughout the year and shares their newly acquired techniques and skills with fellow firefighters upon completion of the competition, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of countless individuals on the road.
Six firefighters from Cape Town are set to participate in the prestigious World Rescue Challenge in Lanzarote, Spain, in October. This international event will see them compete against specialized extrication teams from around the world. The Cape Town Destroyers are the only African team in the competition.
