The Cape Peninsula Baboon Management Joint Task Team (CPBMJTT) has unveiled a groundbreaking plan to manage the area’s baboon population, including the establishment of the Cape Peninsula Baboon Advisory Group (CPBAG). The CPBAG will advise and facilitate the application of the Cape Peninsula Baboon Strategic Management Plan (CPBSMP) at a local level, ensuring continuous and productive interaction among varying constituencies and building strategic alliances with stakeholders. The objective is to maintain a sustainable Urban Baboon Program that includes local communities, operationalizes the Baboon Strategic Management Plan, and seamlessly transitions into the subsequent phase.
The community meetings held by the Cape Peninsula Baboon Management Joint Task Team aim to cocreate viable solutions specific to each locality, with community members actively participating in proposing solutions. Attendees will also receive essential information on baboon populations, proposed interventions, and implementation strategies. The initiative reflects a proactive and collaborative approach to sustainable baboon management, striking a balance between human settlement and wildlife conservation.
The CPBMJTT aims to incorporate the perspectives of community members and stakeholders instead of enforcing topdown solutions in their community dialogues to strengthen community engagement and develop customized solutions for baboon management. Led by representatives from SANParks, CapeNature, and the City of Cape Town, the meetings will empower community members to suggest relevant interventions and reflect the African philosophy of Ubuntu. The CPBMJTT is committed to transparency and inclusivity, and the community can access the Cape Peninsula Baboon Strategic Management Plan readily on their websites.
In the Cape Peninsula, a diverse group of organizations has formed the Baboon Management Joint Task Team (JTT) to address the future of the area’s Chacma baboon population. The JTT consists of representatives from SANParks, CapeNature, and the City of Cape Town. The team has been working on a Baboon Strategic Management Plan (BSMP) draft, which they aim to finalize by the end of September. This project has sparked considerable public interest, with over 800 comments submitted by concerned citizens.
