The Discord Over John Hlophe’s Assignment to the Judicial Service Commission

by Tumi Makgale
July 22, 2024

South African group AfriForum has taken legal action opposing the appointment of deposed judge John Hlophe to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), arguing that it breaches the National Assembly’s constitutional duty and risks the judiciary’s reputation and independence. Hlophe was found guilty of serious judicial misconduct in 2021 and dismissed by President Cyril Ramaphosa. AfriForum’s CEO Kallie Kriel stated that it was “inconceivable” that someone previously regarded as unfit to serve as a judge could evaluate the morals and competence of prospective judges.

by Sizwe Dlamini
April 25, 2024

Tensions are rising in South Africa following a vigilante incident involving a group advocating for Cape’s autonomy. The ANC is concerned about the racial tension sparked by the incident, which involved the barricading of the R62 road connecting Eastern and Western Cape. The Cape Independence Party denies any racial charges and claims their intention was an expression of their aspiration for independence. The incident is a violation of human rights and the Constitution, urging state bodies to conduct a comprehensive investigation. The incident has highlighted the brewing political discord and racial tensions within South Africa.
