The rise of industrial agriculture, the proliferation of processed and fast food, and the globalization of food markets have all contributed to a culture of convenience and instant gratification. However, this has come at a cost: the nutritional quality of our food is declining, with potentially severe consequences for our Health and the environment.
South Africa’s food system is in crisis. Once a country that produced abundant food, today, it faces severe challenges in providing access to healthy and nutritious foods for its people. The food system is plagued by inequalities rooted in colonialism and capitalism, with most of the population unable to afford a healthy diet.
