Westerford High School in Newlands recently brought the iconic South African musical District Six to life. The performance showcased the story’s enduring relevance and captured the original work’s essence. The idea for the production came from the drama teacher, Daniella Brown, who wanted to stage a local story that resonated with the diverse community of Westerford. Despite the pandemic halting rehearsals in 2020, the school persevered and delivered a stunning performance that could have comfortably played at the nearby Baxter Theatre.
Comic Con Cape Town has officially sold out all four days of the festival, causing excitement throughout the city. The festival will run from April 27th to April 30th, 2023 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. This event offers attendees a range of activities, from gaming and comics to shopping and cosplay, and even the chance to see international celebrities.
World Book Day is approaching quickly, and city libraries are gearing up to celebrate. This year’s theme is “your” World Book Day, and libraries throughout the city have arranged a variety of events to promote the love of books and reading. Scheduled activities will take place before and after April 23rd. Councillor Patricia van der Ross, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, believes that libraries should take every opportunity to encourage a passion for reading.
Ayanda ka Nobakabona, a playwright from the Zwelitsha informal settlement in Cape Town, has won multiple awards at the prestigious Zabalaza Theatre Festival for his play, “Tiro’s Toughloop Testimony.” The play, based on the life of antiapartheid activist Onkgopotse Tiro, earned awards for Best Script, Best Actor, and the Finest of the Festival award, shared with “Oorwinnings Reis” and “Lamentations.” Ka Nobakabona’s work is a moving testimony to the power of art to educate and preserve history.
