Wine brands are leading the way in sustainability by implementing ecofriendly practices such as organic and biodynamic farming, water and energy efficiency, waste reduction, and fair labor practices. In addition, ethical wine production is gaining traction with Fairtrade certification and advocacy for wildlife conservation. These brands, including Mothercity Liquors, Lubanzi Wines, and Waterkloof Wines, are setting the standard for a more sustainable and socially responsible future in the industry.
The Golden Vines Awards 2023 was a starstudded event that celebrated the best in the wine and spirits industry, with winners including Sadie Family Wines, Domaine de la Romanée Conti, and Penfolds. The ceremony, held at the Opera Garnier in Paris, drew in nearly 1,000 professionals from 120 countries, including 27 Masters of Wine, 22 Master Sommeliers, and over 180 winemakers and wine merchants. Eben Sadie of Sadie Family Wines won the prestigious 2023 VistaJet Golden Vines World’s Best Rising Star Award for the second year in a row, solidifying his reputation as one of South Africa’s most celebrated winemakers.
In 2023, Stellenbosch University’s Faculty of AgriSciences and the Department of Viticulture and Oenology, in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD), the Cape Winemakers Guild (CWG), and the Elsenburg Agricultural Training Institute, welcomed 22 female students in Grade 11 from various provinces to participate in the Viticulture and Oenology Winter School Programme.
