The 96th Comrades Marathon is a true testament to the human spirit and an excellent display of the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) dedication and perseverance. This year, 200 officers are participating in the ultimate human race, bringing people from different walks of life together.
Out of the 200 participating police officers, 170 are men, and 30 are women, showcasing a diverse representation from the force. Although only 26 officers are first-time runners, many of them are familiar with the Comrades Marathon’s challenge.
The SAPS is committed to ensuring the fitness and wellness of its officers to serve and protect all South Africans. To promote a healthy lifestyle, the SAPS offers 21 sporting codes, including athletics, rugby, and soccer, among others. Additionally, the SAPS has implemented a fitness policy that requires regular fitness tests and assessments for operational members.
General Fannie Masemola, the National Commissioner of the SAPS, supports and encourages the participating officers. He emphasizes the importance of wellness and fitness within the organization, stating that the SAPS cannot wait to have the officers back to arrest more criminals.
The safety and security of participants and supporters are of paramount importance to the SAPS. The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Provincial Commissioner, Lt. Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, details the extensive security measures in place to ensure the Comrades Marathon’s safety. The SAPS has deployed officers on the ground for heightened police visibility, air support operations, and foot patrols along the marathon route. Additionally, the SAPS is collaborating with private security and other stakeholders to keep the event free of criminal activity.
The Comrades Marathon is an iconic South African race that celebrates the power of unity, perseverance, and human spirit. The participation of 200 police officers in this year’s event demonstrates the SAPS’s dedication to wellness, fitness, and service to their country. As the race commences, the men and women in blue receive support and encouragement from their colleagues, embodying the spirit of camaraderie that defines the Comrades Marathon.
