The City Takes Action Against Illegal Electricity Connections in Philippi

On September 13, 2023, the City of Philippi’s electricity personnel, contractors, and law enforcement agencies joined forces to tackle the issue of illegal electricity connections in the area. Despite facing violent resistance from a small group of residents, the teams succeeded in disconnecting these unlawful connections.

The Dangers of Illegal Connections

Illegal connections overload the energy grid, leading to power outages that can last for extended periods, affecting hundreds of residents and damaging vital infrastructure. Such connections also pose a significant risk to the community, especially children who may be electrocuted by unsafe connections.

Successful Disconnection and Confiscation of Illegal Cables

The teams’ determined efforts led to the confiscation of over a truckload of cables used for illegal connections. The City’s message is clear – they will continue to protect their electricity infrastructure and supply only those who are legally connected. The broader community must not suffer from prolonged power outages that damage infrastructure and pose risks to safety.

Unsustainable Burden on the Grid

Illegal connections place an unsustainable burden on the grid, leading to prolonged outages that can take up to eight hours to repair. Such connections target overhead infrastructure, streetlights, kiosks, mini substations, and underground cabling. Repetitive repairs of the same infrastructure are not only unsustainable but also a drain on resources.

Call to Action for the Community

The City calls on the community to unite against acts of vandalism, illegal connections, and obstacles to service delivery. Residents are encouraged to report illegal connections to the authorities, and anonymous tip-offs are welcomed. The City offers a reward of R5,000 to anyone who provides information leading to the arrest, confiscation of stolen or illegal goods, or the surrender of such goods.

The City’s Commitment

City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Councillor Beverley van Reenen, urges communities to join hands with the City in fighting against destructive activities that hinder service delivery. With the support of the public, the City can combat the issue of illegal connections, ensuring a safe and reliable electricity supply for all residents.

Reporting Illegal Connections

To provide anonymous tip-offs or report illegal connections, the public can call the hotline at 0800 1100 77. The City is committed to preserving its infrastructure and maintaining a stable power supply for Philippi residents, ensuring their safety and the uninterrupted delivery of essential services.

The entry of Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite internet service, into South Africa is facing tough challenges due to local laws that require foreign companies to partner with local investors. Critics argue that these rules slow down internet access, especially in rural areas. Supporters, like former politician Tony Leon, believe that easing these regulations could boost technology and improve relations with the U.S. However, Starlink recently withdrew its application to operate in the country, raising concerns about how South Africa can attract foreign investment while addressing historical inequalities. This debate highlights the struggle between supporting local interests and embracing new technology for a better future.
