From 12 August to 2 September, the Cape Town City Ballet is staging a mesmerizing rendition of Don Quixote at Artscape. The timeless Spanish adventure combines laughter, passion, and extraordinary ballet performances, taking the audience on a thrilling journey alongside the legendary Don Quixote and his loyal companion, Sancho Panza.

A Timeless Tale of Love and Adventure

The ballet is based on Miguel de Cervantes’ classic novel and unfolds in three acts, weaving a dream-like tale with a heartwarming adventure. Central to the story is a forbidden love between Kitri, the spirited female lead, and the dashing but economically challenged Basilio.

Kitri’s ambitious father seeks to marry her off to a wealthy nobleman, Gamache, leading to a tale of determination, courage, and love prevailing against all odds. In the end, Don Quixote emerges as the unlikely hero.

A World-Class Production

British-born Maina Gielgud, a renowned figure in the world of ballet, brings her extraordinary talent to recreate this unforgettable production. Her expert knowledge ensures every aspect of the production is meticulously crafted and executed.

Gielgud collaborates with guest repetiteurs Marilyn Vella-Gatt and Australian-born Mark Pace, both of whom have lent their immense expertise to guide Cape Town City Ballet in capturing the essence of this cherished ballet.

Marilyn Vella-Gatt, an esteemed Benesh choreologist, has breathed life into ballets by distinguished choreographers such as John Cranko and Frederick Ashton. Mark Pace, the lead classical ballet teacher at the Conservatoire of Lille, France, adds his touch to the arduous rehearsal process, enhancing the precision and beauty of the performance.

A Cast of International Talent

The cast of Don Quixote features a dazzling array of international and local talent. Royal Ballet principal Vadim Muntagirov, affectionately known as ‘Vadream,’ partners with the accomplished Japanese dancer, Fumi Kaneko. First soloist Antonio Casalinho and soloist Margarita Fernandes from the Bavarian State Ballet contribute their award-winning prowess to multiple shows.

A Symphonic Journey

Selected performances showcase an additional layer of magic with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of Maestro Jonathan McPhee, taking the audience on a symphonic journey. McPhee, a seasoned conductor with experience directing major ballet companies worldwide, ensures the music perfectly complements the dancers’ every move.
