Cape Town’s Celebratory Carnival

This coming Saturday, March 16, 2024, Green Point will become a mesmerizing spectacle of colour, imagination, and community spirit thanks to the Cape Town Carnival. Expect to be spellbound by over 1,400 performers from every corner of the city, who plan to wow an estimated crowd of 30,000 onlookers along the Fan Walk. They will captivate everyone with an unparalleled display of magnificent floats, elaborate costumes, and life-sized art installations.

The 2024 Carnival is embracing the theme of “lekker”, an expressive term that guarantees a feast for the eyes for those fortunate enough to attend the event. The Carnival is not merely a celebration of creativity and cultural diversity; it also offers a vital platform for local artisans, float builders, and costume designers. These talented individuals pour their skills and passion into crafting this unforgettable experience.

A City’s Commitment to Talent and Opportunities

Alderman JP Smith, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, voiced his thoughts on the Carnival, saying, “The Cape Town Carnival showcases the city’s dedication to nurturing talent and providing opportunities. Our collaboration with the Carnival highlights our pride in this dynamic representation of our city’s spirit. We extend an invitation to everyone to come and share in the joyous spectacle this Saturday.”

The Cape Town Carnival procession will begin at 19:00, with a pre-parade at 18:00, taking place along Somerset Road on the Fan Walk. From 15:00 onwards, the carnival village will open its doors, brimming with anticipation and excitement. Please remember that due to the event, road closures in the Green Point area will begin from Friday, March 15, 2024.

Thrilling Sporting Events and Competitions

A stone’s throw away from the Carnival, Century City will be the stage for a breathtaking display of skill and bravado as 16 of the nation’s top spinners go head-to-head in the Red Bull Shay’ iMoto championship. This high-octane event demands drivers to navigate obstacles while performing dramatic spins in their vehicles. The event will launch at the Century City Steel Bridge E-Parking Facility at 18:00 on Saturday.

In the meantime, the Cape Town Surf Pro at Long Beach in Kommetjie will feature 50 top-tier senior surfers slicing through the waves on March 16 and 17, 2024. This free event is a fantastic chance to witness some of the world’s best surfers displaying their skills against the stunning backdrop of the South African shoreline.

The Absa Cape Epic, the globe’s premier mountain bike stage race, is ready to embark on an eight-day journey from the scenic Lourensford Wine Estate on Sunday. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the race promises an engaging spectacle with more than 1,000 riders crossing several Western Cape towns. The race will kick off in Cape Town and reach its exciting conclusion in Stellenbosch on Sunday, March 24.
