As the people of Ulundi, KwaZulu-Natal, prepare to pay their final respects to the late Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, security measures are being significantly enhanced. The South African Police Service (SAPS), under the guidance of the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS), is mobilizing resources to ensure the safety and security of the 20,000 mourners expected to attend the funeral.

Collaboration for Comprehensive Security Plan

Cooperation between NATJOINTS, the Provincial Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (PROVJOINTS), various law enforcement agencies, and government departments is crucial to provide a safe and secure environment for the funeral. This collaboration has led to the development of a comprehensive security plan that takes into account the venue, route, and other key factors.

Responsibility for Orderly Behavior

NATJOINTS has carefully assessed the readiness of all law enforcement agencies involved and is satisfied with the security plan in place. Mourners attending the funeral service are urged to behave responsibly, cooperate with law enforcement officers, and exercise patience throughout the event. Parents and guardians are also advised to carefully consider the attendance of young children in light of the heightened security measures.

Traditional Regalia and Prohibited Items

In keeping with Zulu tradition and culture, attendees dressed in traditional regalia, such as Amabutho, are allowed to bring traditional spears and shields to the venue for the sole purpose of honoring the late Prince. However, firearms are strictly prohibited, and any illegal discharge of firearms will not be tolerated.

Strict Enforcement of Law

Law enforcement agencies will act swiftly against individuals found to be committing illegal acts, and attendees are cautioned to adhere to the law. During the Special Official Category 1 Funeral on September 16, 2023, a 21-gun salute will be performed, producing extremely loud bangs. Special care should be taken for people with ill-health, the elderly, and children who may be affected by the noise. Pet owners are also advised to make provisions for their animals during the funeral ceremony.

No Drone Zone

The Prince Mangosuthu Regional Stadium, where the funeral will take place, is designated a strictly “no drone zone area.” With these security measures in place, NATJOINTS remains confident that attendees of all races, colors, creeds, and political affiliations will come together harmoniously to honor the late Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi.

Ensuring a Dignified and Safe Event

The heightened security measures during this somber occasion indicate the significance of ensuring a dignified and safe event for all in attendance. The collaboration between the various law enforcement agencies and government departments demonstrates the collective effort to guarantee a smoothly executed funeral for a respected public figure. This collaboration provides a framework for managing large-scale events in the future while maintaining the safety and security of the public.
