The Western Cape province has seen impressive collaboration and dedication from various municipal law enforcement agencies and the South African Police Service (SAPS) in recent operations. The Swartland, Overstrand Rural Safety Units (RSUs), and the Mossel Bay K-9 units have shown significant success in arresting criminals and confiscating illicit items in rural areas.
Celebrating the Successes of Swartland, Overstrand, and Mossel Bay K-9 and Rural Safety Units
Impressive Results
Over a single weekend from 28th to 31st July 2023, the law enforcement agencies arrested 37 individuals for various crimes, with 27 arrests in the Overstrand municipal area and 10 in the Swartland. The Mossel Bay K-9 unit showcased its skills in the confiscation of dagga in Kwanonqaba and Highway Park, highlighting the potential of the unit’s impending official launch.
Swartland Operations
The Swartland RSUs focused their efforts in Malmesbury, Redelinghuys, and Piketberg, resulting in several arrests for drug-related crimes, possession of drugs, dealing in drugs, and possession of dangerous weapons. The RSUs also confiscated mandrax tablets, tik, dagga, and a knife.
Overstrand Operations
The Overstrand unit arrested individuals for possession of drugs, dealing in liquor, possession of West Coast Rock Lobster Tails (WCRL), arrest warrants, and possession of dangerous weapons. They also confiscated illicit items such as mandrax tablets, tik, an imitation firearm, and two WCRL tails.
Commendation and Encouragement
Western Cape Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Reagen Allen, commended the K-9 and rural safety units for their tireless work in removing criminals and their activities from these communities. Allen emphasized that these successes in rural areas demonstrate the Western Cape Government’s commitment to ensuring safety throughout the entire province.
Minister Allen also encouraged all communities to collaborate with law enforcement units, including the SAPS, neighborhood watches (NHWs), and community policing forums (CPFs), to eradicate crime in these areas and create a safer and dignified living environment for everyone in the Western Cape.
