The City of Cape Town’s Coastal Management branch is undertaking a significant redevelopment of the iconic Fisherman’s Lane precinct located at the Strandfontein Pavilion. This restoration project began in October 2022 and is expected to conclude by the end of September 2023.
Milestones Achieved in the Refurbishment
The extent of the refurbishment includes the removal of a damaged road and seawall, the construction of a new access road connecting parking areas, and the development of innovative recreational facilities. Among the significant milestones of the refurbishment are the construction of an expansive staircase leading to the beach, replacing the hazardous “Broken Road” that previously existed. A rock revetment has been installed to safeguard the car park from the coastal wave action.
The western parking area has been relocated further inland, with a gabion edge constructed for added protection. Essential services that were previously exposed to coastal processes on the seaside of the berm have been moved to the landside. Additionally, the road linking the western and eastern parking areas has been reconstructed on the same footprint.
Collaborations and Artistic Endeavours
The City collaborated with two local NGOs and mosaic artist Jocelyn De Freitas. De Freitas engaged high school students in hands-on skills training, allowing them to contribute to the mosaic artwork that will embellish the new playground at Fisherman’s Lane.
Final Phase of the Project
As the project enters its final phase, work continues on completing the sidewalks, building a link between the picnic and braai (barbecue) area and the beach, and installing lighting. The construction of braai facilities, the addition of play equipment, and the implementation of art and soft landscaping are expected to be accomplished in the coming weeks.
The transformed precinct
Once completed, the revitalized Fisherman’s Lane will offer residents a high-quality, welcoming, and dignified public space for recreation and leisure. The playground’s landscaping will feature lawns and trees for picnics, while the berm separating the northern and eastern parking areas will be vegetated with native coastal plants.
The City’s Dedication to Coastal Landmarks
The Fisherman’s Lane project exemplifies the City’s dedication to preserving and enhancing significant coastal landmarks. The restoration and upgrade of this iconic coastal facility will undoubtedly serve the residents of Cape Town and its visitors for years to come.
