A Remarkable Achievement in Crime Prevention
The North West Province of South Africa recently experienced a significant victory in combating crime, thanks to Operation Shanela. This high-density operation, led by the South African Police Service (SAPS), resulted in the arrest of 597 suspects for various crimes between October 23 and 29, 2023.

During the operation, authorities confiscated various items, such as two firearms with ammunition, eight cell phones, drugs, and precious metals. While some suspects have already faced trial, others are anticipated to appear in court this week at different locations throughout the province.
The operation’s extensive scope included the search of 93 premises, the establishment of 12 roadblocks, and the shutdown of 11 unlicensed liquor establishments. In a particularly distressing event, a 45-year-old police officer was assaulted with a sjambok (a traditional African whip) by an alleged tuck shop owner during consumer inspections in Lebaleng Location, Makwassie. The officer, in the process of removing expired goods from the shop, was attacked from behind and later received medical treatment at a local clinic. Investigations into the incident continue, with an arrest expected soon.
Strengthening Consumer Safety and Collaboration
North West’s Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, asserted that an attack on a police officer is an attack against the state and will not be tolerated. He also stressed the significance of consumer safety, referencing recent illnesses and even deaths caused by the consumption of expired products.
