Escape the winter chill and immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Shakespeare’s beloved romantic comedy, Twelfth Night, at The Masque Theatre in Cape Town.
A Timeless Tale of Love and Laughter
From 5th to 15th July, The Masque Theatre will come alive with a timeless tale of laughter, love, and a touch of chaos. Director Barbara Basel embraces the theme of freedom and disorder associated with the traditional festival of the twelfth night of Christmas. Experience the captivating performance of Shakespeare’s renowned cross-dressing love triangle, witty fool, and mischievous antics.
A Bold Twist on a Classic Production
In a bold twist, Basel sets the production in 1920s Germany, amid the opulent Weimar Republic. Audiences will be transported from classic palaces to cabaret nightclubs, immersing themselves in the decadence and extravagance of the era.
“This production has been three years in the making, originally planned for 2020 but delayed due to the Covid-19 lockdown,” reveals Basel. “With rehearsals now in full swing, we are thrilled to finally bring this delightful romantic comedy to audiences, featuring our passionate and talented team.”
A Talented Cast
The Masque stage will be graced with familiar faces, including Wayne Ronne as Duke Orsino, Tami Schrire as Lady Olivia, Hannah Molyneux as Feste the fool, and Kathryn Griffiths as Maria.
A Rich History of Community Theatre
With a history spanning over 60 years, The Masque holds a prominent position in Cape Town’s cultural landscape. Established by local attorney Bertie Stern, the theatre was created with the vision of promoting voluntary participation in all forms of theatre, regardless of social or political circumstances.
As a registered non-profit organization, The Masque aims to make theatre accessible to all, embracing diversity and community engagement. Run entirely by volunteers, the theatre showcases a wide range of performances and genres, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility.
A Thrilling Post-Lockdown Era
Faeron Wheeler, the programming manager, expresses delight in having Barbara back at the helm of a Masque Theatre production. “With this show marking her tenth production since 2011, Barbara is no stranger to The Masque. We are excited to see the fun and magic that Twelfth Night will undoubtedly bring, launching us into a new and thrilling post-lockdown era at the theatre.”
A Venue for Everyone
The Masque is wheelchair-friendly, boasts a fully licensed bar, and offers snacks before shows and during intervals. Under the guidance of a team with professional theatre experience, The Masque remains committed to presenting high-quality amateur theatre productions and serving as a hub for artistic engagement within the local community.
