Plettenberg Bay, a picturesque coastal town, is undergoing a significant transformation with the implementation of several infrastructure projects. On August 28th, Western Cape Premier Alan Winde, MEC of Infrastructure Tertuis Simmers, Executive Mayor Dave Swart, and Ward Councillor Claude Terblanche gathered to commemorate the groundbreaking Ebenhaeser housing project’s progress.

The Ebenhaeser housing project is an ambitious venture aimed at addressing the long-standing need for affordable housing opportunities in the New Horizons community, a town established in the late 1970s. The construction of Phase 1 has been progressing at an impressive pace since the project’s inception in March, with completion slated for April 2024. The multi-phased implementation process will ultimately yield a staggering 1,642 housing opportunities, transforming the lives of countless community members.

Premier Winde emphasized that infrastructure development is a vital component in building a resilient, world-class province. However, he acknowledged that the true significance of these homes extends far beyond mere construction materials, as they embody a profound investment into the community’s potential.

Ward Councillor Claude Terblanche expressed gratitude to MEC Simmers for his unwavering commitment to bringing the project to fruition. In response, MEC Simmers highlighted the importance of transparency and effective partnerships, asserting that a collaborative approach between various government spheres, the community of New Horizons, and its leadership helped tailor the housing project to the community’s specific needs. The first batch of homes is anticipated to be handed over before Christmas.

Bloukrans Road Project

On the same day, MEC Simmers and Ward Councillor Jessica Kamkam officiated the successful completion of the Bloukrans Road project in the Bitou Municipality. The R110 million project began construction in July 2021 and was completed in June 2023, creating 120 jobs and opportunities for 16 local enterprises and emerging contractors in the process.

MEC Simmers expressed delight at the project’s outcome, emphasizing that the Western Cape Government has demonstrated its commitment to the community and businesses of Bitou. Furthermore, the department allocated R26 million to enterprise development within the project, ensuring that farmers can now transport their goods and products to market more efficiently.
