These operations underlined the force’s commitment to putting a stop to the spread of illegal firearms, a leading cause spurring violent crimes in communities.

In the Chris Hani district, the Tactical Response Team, based on received intelligence around illegal firearms, undertook a night-time operation on 27 February 2024. The mission resulted in the arrest of three suspects and the seizure of three firearms along with ammunition. The apprehended individuals, aged between 28 and 58, were charged with illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

Tactical Successes in Crime Prevention

Simultaneously in the Joe Gqabi district, a 25-year-old was apprehended on the same day under the watchful supervision of the Public Order Policing in Lusikisiki. The suspect, located in the Mrwabo Locality, was found possessing an Uzi rifle illegally, with its serial number scratched off, leading to his arrest on charges of possession of a banned firearm.

A noteworthy success was achieved in the Port St Johns area, a result of the combined efforts of crime intelligence and the Tactical Response Team. Their joint operation on 26 February 2024 led to the apprehension of a man in his middle age and the recovery of four homemade shotguns, thus exposing the hidden menace in the community where such self-made weapons often remain unnoticed.

The final operation occurred on 28 February 2024 in the OR Tambo District. Here, the District Task Team acted on received intelligence and arrested a man for illegal possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition at Mthatha Slovo Park, Maholweni area. A 9X19mm BXP machine gun with a scrubbed-off serial number, along with fifteen live rounds of ammunition, were confiscated in the process.

These operations received the approval of the Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Nomthetheleli Mene, who underlined that each seized firearm represented a potential threat neutralized. Mene, resonating with law enforcement officers worldwide, drew attention to the crucial role firearms play in committing crimes across provinces.
