The Water and Sanitation Directorate of the City of Cape Town has declared their plans to commence maintenance work on the water supply infrastructure of Hout Bay. This maintenance work will focus on repairing and replacing pipes and valves in the Scottsville and Baviaanskloof areas on Tuesday, 1 August 2023. The objective of this critical maintenance work is to continue providing a smooth operation for the water supply network in the area.

Interruptions on the Water Supply

Due to the necessary maintenance tasks, the main water supply to the affected areas will be shut down temporarily from 10:00 to 16:00. The maintenance team will perform a valve verification exercise, which will cause intermittent water supply disruptions. The City sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience that may arise and assures residents that they will undertake the work with minimal disruption.

What Residents Should Be Aware Of

In preparation for planned water supply disruptions, residents are advised to store adequate water in clean, sealed containers for use during the disruption period. It is critical to note that all sites used for water and sanitation repairs and upgrades are construction sites and are off-limits to the public. Maintenance work can sometimes be more complex than initially anticipated, causing delays in the completion of the work. Furthermore, residents may notice discolored or milky water for a short period after the restoration of the water supply due to trapped air in the pipes. This issue will resolve if the water is allowed to stand in a glass for a few minutes, returning to its normal, clear appearance.

Staying Informed

To stay updated on the maintenance work and the location of water tankers, residents are encouraged to follow the City of Cape Town’s Twitter account, @CityofCTAlerts.

Cooperation is Key

By adhering to the guidelines and being prepared, the City of Cape Town, its Water and Sanitation Directorate, and the residents of Hout Bay can work together to ensure the successful completion of this essential maintenance work. The cooperation of all parties involved will lead to an improved overall performance and stability of the water supply infrastructure, enabling the continued provision of safe and reliable water to the community.
