Williams was off-duty and walking with his two-year-old daughter near the intersection of Trampoline and Cadillac Streets when he was fatally shot. He was laid to rest on Tuesday in adherence to Muslim customs.

Arrest Made

Grassy Park police authorities arrested a 40-year-old man on Thursday morning in connection to Williams’ untimely death. The apprehended suspect is believed to be a member of a local gang and may have sought shelter among his affiliates within the Grassy Park policing area. Police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut confirmed the arrest, stating that the suspect will face a murder charge in Mitchells Plain court once formally charged.

Police Dedication

Grassy Park police intensified patrols in the area to apprehend the suspect, displaying unwavering dedication in their quest for justice. Lt. General Thembisile Patekile, the Western Cape police commissioner, commended the officers’ commitment to upholding justice.

Calls for Thorough Investigation

Alderman JP Smith, the City’s mayoral committee member for safety and security, expressed satisfaction with the arrest but emphasized the need to allow the South African Police Service (SAPS) to conduct a thorough investigation to build a robust case against the suspect. Smith offered the City’s investigative resources to SAPS, acknowledging the crucial role that law enforcement and policing structures play in maintaining societal order.

Condemnation of Gangs

Police Oversight and Community Safety MEC, Reagen Allen, welcomed the arrest and urged witnesses to cooperate with law enforcement agencies, including SAPS. He called for a comprehensive case to be presented in court and stressed the importance of apprehending the individual responsible for ordering the shooting. Allen condemned the destructive influence of gangs on society, emphasizing their contribution to heartache and suffering.

Upholding Justice

The tragic death of Officer Williams highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in curbing gang-related violence and maintaining societal order. The swift arrest and calls for a thorough investigation underscore the importance of upholding justice and protecting the institutions that keep our communities safe.
