Black Sheep Restaurant: A Lively Gem on Kloof Street

1 min read
Black Sheep Restaurant

If you’re looking for a laid-back dining experience with a lively atmosphere and delicious comfort food, look no further than Black Sheep Restaurant on Kloof Street. This local gem has been a fixture for Cape Town locals since it opened in 2013, and it’s easy to see why.

A Family Business

Owned by Jorge Silva and Jonathan Japha and their wives, sisters Nina and Sherry, Black Sheep is a family business with a shared love of great food. Having worked in Michelin-star restaurants and modern gastropubs in the UK and Ireland for ten years, head chef Johnny and his team have brought their expertise to Cape Town’s dining scene.

Fresh Ingredients at Black Sheep Restaurant

Expect a constantly changing chalkboard menu that reflects the team’s commitment to using locally sourced, fresh ingredients. For example, the fish is delivered fresh from Abalobi, and they buy in a whole sheep or pig and work through all the cuts – resulting in a menu that is decided according to mood, weather, and availability of ingredients.

The Menu of Black Sheep Restaurant

The lunch and dinner menus offer hearty dishes with global flavors, such as kingklip fillet on lentils spiced with garam masala, a globetrotting selection of curries, and burgers. Take advantage of the asparagus wrapped in crisp filo pastry with Parmesan or the savory spanakopita. And be sure to save room for great and classic desserts, such as sticky toffee pudding and walnut tart.

The Atmosphere

The atmosphere is lively and welcoming, with the windows open wide onto the street for lunch service. Dinner service is always busy, and the music turns a notch, creating a buzzing atmosphere. Jorge says Black Sheep doesn’t offer a quiet, romantic table, but if you want great food and a lively atmosphere, it is.

The Dark Horse

For pre-dinner drinks or while you wait for a table to free up, check out their sister bar across the road, The Dark Horse.
