The Cape Bird Club (CBC) has partnered with the City of Cape Town to restore a sand dune near the planned environmental center and outdoor classroom at Westridge Park, Mitchells Plain. This partnership, which began on June 29, 2023, marks a milestone in the ongoing collaboration between the CBC and the City’s Biodiversity Management Branch. The CBC has actively participated in various advisory committees for the City’s Nature Reserves Protected Area, and this initiative aligns with their mission of supporting legacy projects that promote environmental education and habitat restoration.

Westridge Park’s Development Captures the Interest of the Cape Bird Club

The CBC’s involvement in the Zandvlei and False Bay Nature Reserves led to their interest in Westridge Park’s development. The restoration project aims to enhance the local ecosystem by planting indigenous Strandveld species in the sand dunes. This endeavor will take place in three phases, with the final two commencing once the environmental center is complete. Ultimately, the project will benefit not only the native birdlife but also the community, providing educational and leisure opportunities for the public.

The environmental center and outdoor classroom will feature a Mole snake wooden boardwalk, offering residents a chance to appreciate and learn about the region’s natural heritage. He emphasized how the initiative will create an oasis for birdlife in a high-density area and foster a deeper understanding of the ecological history of the area.
