On June 22nd, 2023, the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town will host the opening night of Encounters South African International Documentary Festival’s 25th-anniversary edition. From Humble Beginnings to the Most Prominent Documentary Festival
Encounters started in 1999, with only 21 films, and has since evolved into Africa’s most prominent documentary festival, showcasing a tremendous 54 films in the 25th-anniversary edition. Since its inception, the festival has showcased over 1,000 films, making it one of the few African events dedicated entirely to the documentary genre.
The Festival’s Importance
The City of Cape Town recognizes Encounters’ value in providing a platform for filmmakers to share their stories with vast audiences, contributing to the global film industry. Alderman JP Smith praised the festival organizers’ innovative thinking and commitment to uniting the film community.
A Diverse Selection of Films
The festival will feature a diverse selection of local, African, and international documentaries screened at various venues across the city. The films will be showcased at venues such as the Labia Theatre, V&A Waterfront Ster-Kinekor, Bertha House Mowbray, and The Bertha Movie House Isivivana Community Centre Khayelitsha. The Outreach Programme, in collaboration with VUMA Pop-Up Cinema, extends the Encounters experience to venues and communities beyond the city center.

Over 50 films will be on display, shedding light on untold stories through authentic voices. Notable themes include gender-based violence, the enigmatic world of social media in Africa, war crimes, child soldiers, food security challenges on the continent, and climate change. This rising trend in documentary filmmaking reflects a growing interest from audiences seeking entertainment, education, and inspiration.

In addition to the film screenings, the festival offers a series of panel discussions, Q&A sessions, and networking events aimed at fostering conversations about documentary funding in Africa, the impact of filming on sustainability, and amplifying the voices of female creatives.
