On June 7th, 2023, two off-duty Western Cape Police Band members – Sergeants Wayne Snyders and Andrea Sinclair – played a crucial role in arresting a suspected hijacker. The incident took place when the officers were returning home after performing at a provincial sport day in Pinelands.

The Chase

While driving along Spine Road, the two officers witnessed a high-speed pursuit. A City of Cape Town Law Enforcement officer was chasing a black Ford Fiesta, whose driver appeared poised to escape. Determined not to let the suspect get away, Sergeants Snyders and Sinclair joined the chase and placed themselves on duty.

As the suspect drove onto Old Faure Road, the sergeants followed closely and managed to narrow the gap. The suspect, in a desperate move to avoid capture, lost control of his vehicle, hit the curb and deflated three of his car’s tires. With no other option, he fled on foot.

The Arrest

Sergeants Snyders and Sinclair chased the suspect on foot. Sgt. Snyders caught up with him before he could escape into the residential area and apprehended him. Meanwhile, Sgt. Sinclair noticed the suspect discard an object during the chase – a firearm and ammunition.

The officers retraced their steps and successfully recovered a 9mm pistol and 13 rounds of ammunition from the street. An investigation revealed that the vehicle the suspect had been driving was stolen during a hijacking in Mitchell’s Plain earlier that day.

Facing Charges

The suspect, who is 23 years old, is facing charges related to possession of presumed stolen property, possession of a prohibited firearm, and illegal possession of ammunition. The case will soon be heard in the Kuilsrivier Magistrates’ court.

Praise for the Officers

The police management has praised the off-duty officers for their exceptional efforts in apprehending the suspect and going beyond the call of duty. The bravery and selflessness of the Western Cape Police Band members not only helped remove a dangerous person from society but also reinforced the community’s trust in the South African Police Service (SAPS).

This inspiring event highlights the unwavering commitment and bravery of the police officers. They selflessly stepped in to prevent a potential tragedy and showed that the dedication to upholding justice transcends working hours and extends to every moment in the lives of those who serve and protect.
