Officers’ Diligence in Tackling Crime Brings Safety to the City

The City’s Traffic Service, Law Enforcement, and Metro Police Departments have taken exemplary action against lawbreakers, resulting in a staggering 267 arrests and 69,774 fines issued for a range of offenses. Their tireless efforts demonstrate their dedication to maintaining public safety and order.

Metro Police Department’s Crime Prevention Patrol

On the evening of August 20, 2023, Metro Police officers were on a crime prevention patrol in the Bishop Lavis area. The officers stopped a vehicle, and upon testing, it was confirmed that the driver’s blood-alcohol level was 0.55 mg/l, leading to their arrest. Officers continued their vigilance, arresting seven more motorists between the ages of 28 and 48 for driving under the influence in the Bellville area. The officers’ efforts led to a total of 48 arrests and 2,962 fines issued for traffic and by-law violations.

Arrests in Response to Gang-Related Shootings

Officers conducted patrols in the Lavender Hill and Retreat areas in response to a spike in gang-related shootings. Their persistence led to the arrest of three suspects for possession of drugs, effectively disrupting the local drug trade. The officers seized nine Mandrax tablets, eight sachets of Tik, and two stoppe Dagga.

Cape Town Traffic Service’s Role in Public Safety

The Cape Town Traffic Service issued a formidable 64,418 fines and arrested 33 motorists for impaired driving. 108 public transport vehicles were impounded under the National Land Transport Act, and 2,231 warrants of arrest were issued.

Law Enforcement’s Commitment to Community Safety

Officers from the Housing Safety Unit responded to a report of illegal occupation in the Langa area. Upon arrival, the officers discovered a group of men drinking outside a rental unit. The female tenant, who had been assaulted by three of the suspects and had her property damaged, was able to positively identify the assailants. As a result, the three men were arrested for malicious damage, assault, and intimidation. Law Enforcement conducted more than 470 enforcement operations throughout the metropole, resulting in 186 arrests and 2,395 fines for various offenses.

Alderman JP Smith commended the officers’ efforts, emphasizing the importance of confiscating narcotics in the fight against crime. He added that the swift response to incidents and the cooperative approach with SAPS, other enforcement agencies, security companies, and Neighborhood Watches are crucial in “creating safer communities.”
