The North West Police Management in South Africa has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to justice by launching Operation Shanela, which resulted in the arrest of 1,037 suspects over the weekend. Operation Shanela aimed to combat various crimes, including drug possession and dealing, rape, assault with intent to cause GBH, common assault, murder, burglary at business or residential premises, malicious damage to property, driving under the influence, among others. It also focused on apprehending undocumented foreign nationals.

Meticulous Approach

The operation employed a meticulous approach that involved searching 5,330 individuals, 389 premises, and 878 vehicles. This sweeping effort led to the closure of 18 unlicensed liquor establishments, and authorities inspected 200 licensed liquor premises. During the operation, law enforcement officers confiscated liquor, a variety of drugs, 39 explosives, three dangerous weapons, and seven firearms.

Notable Case

On August 25, 2023, during a roadblock on the N18 (Mahikeng/Vryburg) road, law enforcement officers intercepted a white Suzuki Ertiga traveling from Delareyville. Upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered 20 master cases of Remington Gold cigarettes worth R425,040.00. The two suspects, aged 24 and 34, were arrested after failing to account for the cigarettes. Authorities also confiscated the vehicle for further investigation. The suspects are expected to appear before the Molopo Magistrates’ Court for possession of illicit cigarettes.
