Our Local @ 117 Kloof

Are you looking for a unique and inviting cafe with a cozy and inviting atmosphere? Look no further than Our Local @ 117 Kloof. This converted mechanic’s workshop has been transformed into a quirky cafe, part conservatory and part antique shop, filled with tall trees in pots, clusters of collectibles, and vintage furniture.

A Taste of the Mediterranean

Our Local @ 117 Kloof has already become a Kloof Street institution, attracting visitors with its brunch, toasties, coffee, and cake. But now, with their new lunch and dinner menu, Our Local is making a compelling argument for settling in on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. The new menu offers generous servings of Mediterranean-inspired mains that are both meaty and vegan.

The owners, Michael Carter and Shayne Schutte, are passionate about sharing good food with friends. The menu offers Mediterranean food with heart, inspired by their love for Italy and the Mediterranean way of life. The food is full of flavor and home-cooked. The Spaghetti Limone is zesty and bright, while the Moroccan chicken dish is roasted in a rich sauce of dates, olives, and capers and served on potato puree. They also serve croissants and bread from Coimbra bakery and cakes, brownies, and tiramisu baked in-house.

An Antique Shop and Conservatory at Our Local @ 117 Kloof

Our Local @ 117 Kloof is not just a restaurant; it is also an antique shop and conservatory. Most of the stuff in the shop is for sale, and as they are constantly sourcing new pieces, there is always something exciting to discover. Drinks and Bar Snacks

Moreover, at Our Local, you can channel the laidback Mediterranean vibe with an Aperol Spritz, Espresso Martini, or classic G&T. You can also enjoy bar snacks like lightly battered zucchini sticks dipped in luscious aioli, and arancini on homemade Napolitana sauce.

Friendly Staff

The attentive and friendly staff at Our Local @ 117 Kloof, especially Luca, who guests rave about, will make sure you have a pleasant time. The place has received some negative reviews regarding service, but it is essential to note that they have received numerous positive reviews.

The Looming VAT Hike in South Africa: A Deeper Dilemma

South Africa is facing a VAT hike from 15% to 16%, which makes life harder for many families, especially those with low incomes. This increase will raise prices on everyday items, like food and electricity, pushing struggling households into even deeper financial trouble. While the government claims this tax is needed to boost revenue for public services, it does little to fix bigger problems like unemployment and poverty. Instead of just raising taxes, the government should focus on creating jobs and supporting small businesses to help everyone thrive. Without real change, the future looks tough for many South Africans.

The Ripple Effect of U.S. Funding Cuts on South Africa’s HIV Response

Recent cuts to U.S. funding, especially from PEPFAR, are causing serious trouble for South Africa’s fight against HIV. Many health facilities have closed, and thousands of crucial healthcare workers have been let go, leading to fewer tests and treatments for people living with HIV. Vulnerable groups, like sex workers and the LGBTQ community, are at risk of losing the specialized care they need due to the shutdown of welcoming centers. Without immediate action, these funding cuts could lead to a steep rise in HIVrelated deaths, leaving many without the support they desperately require.
