The Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (collectively known as BRICS) have recently come together to endorse a Joint Finance Statement under South Africa’s Chairship. This significant milestone in international cooperation took place on August 15, 2023.

On August 23, 2023, Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, South Africa’s Minister in the Presidency for Electricity, signed a Joint Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) with eight leading Chinese companies in the energy sector. The event took place in Johannesburg, amidst the 15th BRICS Summit and a day after China’s State Visit to South Africa.

South Africa and China have celebrated 25 years of diplomatic relations, marked by President Xi Jinping’s fourth state visit to South Africa. The visit comes at a time when both nations have supported each other through various challenges, including apartheid and the COVID19 pandemic.

The City’s Traffic Service, Law Enforcement, and Metro Police Departments have taken exemplary action against lawbreakers, resulting in a staggering 267 arrests and 69,774 fines issued for a range of offenses. Their tireless efforts demonstrate their dedication to maintaining public safety and order.

South Africa’s Minister of Health, Dr. Joe Phaahla, attended the G20 Health Ministers’ Meeting (G20 HMM) in Gandhinagar, India, from August 17th to 19th. This meeting provided an excellent platform for global collaboration to address global health challenges, emphasizing the need for a multisectoral approach.

The Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP) has been instrumental in empowering women in the city of Cape Town. Over the last five financial years, from July 1, 2018, to June 30, 2023, 117,432 women have benefited from shortterm employment and skills development through the EPWP. This program provides critical support to job seekers who have been unsuccessful in finding formal employment.

In 2022, South Africa and China will celebrate their 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations, marking a milestone in their partnership. This journey has been defined by mutual respect and shared goals, with China’s unwavering support during South Africa’s struggle for democracy being a significant part of their shared history.
