The destruction caused by the overflowing Olifants River disrupted the vital connection between Citrusdal and the N7 highway. As the waters rose, the Olifants River violently burst its banks, destroying sections of the road and isolating parts of the Citrusdal community.

In response to this crisis, the Western Cape Department of Infrastructure joined forces with the West Coast District Municipality to repair and reopen the R303, restoring community access within just ten days. The reconstruction process was no small feat, involving repairs to a damaged riverbank and a section of the road washed away by the flood.
