In 2023, South Africa marks the 47th anniversary of the 1976 Student Uprising, a turning point in the nation’s history that sparked significant changes. Since 1994, June 16 has been recognized as National Youth Day, commemorating the sacrifices and contributions of the youth of ’76 and honoring their impact on the country.

To celebrate Youth Month 2023, the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) in collaboration with the Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture (DSAC) have planned a series of events and activities throughout June under the theme “Accelerating Youth Economic Emancipation for a Sustainable Future.” The government’s goal is to provide young people with a platform to explore opportunities and showcase the potential they possess.

Multi-Sectoral Approach to Youth Development

Launching Youth Month 2023

The official launch of Youth Month 2023 will take place on June 1, 2023, at Uncle Tom’s Hall in Soweto. The event will present a detailed Youth Month Roadmap outlining all the planned activities and events throughout June, honoring the memory of the youth of ’76.

This year’s Youth Month activities aim to create a space for multi-sectoral partnerships that can contribute to youth development and showcase opportunities available to young people within both the government and private sectors.
