As we celebrate Youth Month, we can learn a valuable lesson from the life of South African music icon Sipho ‘Hotstix’ Mabuse. His story shows that it is never too late to make positive changes, even if you feel like you’ve wasted your youth. This message is relevant to people of all ages who may regret decisions made in their younger years.
A Journey of Activism and Passion for Music
During a recent conversation with media personality Gasant Abarder, Mabuse shared his journey, marked by both activism and his pursuit of passion for music. His story serves as a testament to the idea that we can continue to grow and learn throughout our lives.
A Panel Discussion on ‘In Conversation with My 25-year-old Self’
At the music event, Music Exchange 2023, Abarder and Mabuse participated in a panel discussion on the topic, “In Conversation with My 25-year-old Self.” The two speakers looked back at their lives and shared insights they would give to their younger selves if they could turn back time.
Learning from Experience
At 25 years old, Mabuse had already started to fight against the apartheid regime in South Africa. His music became a weapon for social change. After the 1976 student uprisings where hundreds of youths were killed, Mabuse left South Africa to pursue his music career internationally, performing to massive global audiences.
It wasn’t until Mabuse turned 60 that he decided to complete his high school education, a step that inspired Abarder to pursue his master’s degree. Today, in his 70s, Mabuse continues to be a student of life, and his conversation with his 25-year-old self is profound.
Abarder shared some advice that he would have given to his younger self. He wished he had not dropped out of university, saved more money, invested in property, focused on his faith, and quit smoking earlier. Despite achieving significant success in his career at a young age, becoming the youngest ever editor of the Cape Argus newspaper at 31, Abarder admits there are things he would have done differently.
Learning from the Past and Moving Forward
While we cannot change the past, Mabuse and Abarder’s stories remind us that we can always learn from our experiences and make better choices moving forward. The wisdom we gain over time can guide us towards a fulfilling life, regardless of our age.
It’s Never Too Late to Make Positive Changes
These two influential figures have shared powerful lessons. We should embrace every opportunity to learn, grow, and make the most of the time we have, no matter how young or old we may be. This Youth Month, let’s reflect on our lives and consider what advice we would give our younger selves. In doing so, we can find inspiration to create a brighter future for ourselves and those around us.
