Alto Wine Estate Restaurant

Alto Wine Estate is a must-visit for those who appreciate big red wines and hearty bistro fare. Nestled in Stellenbosch’s golden triangle, the estate is surrounded by vine-clad hills that offer breathtaking views toward Table Mountain.

Ambiance

The revamped restaurant boasts a relaxed farmhouse ambiance, with terracotta floors, reed ceilings, and wooden tables and chairs. The portraits of the estate’s five winemakers over the fireplace, who have been making wine for over 100 years, testify to Alto’s reputation for superb big red wines. The outdoor tables on the deck and lawns offer gorgeous views, allowing you to immerse yourself in nature while enjoying your meals.

Menu of Alto Wine Estate Restaurant

The short menu features hearty dishes that match the character of Alto’s wines. The highlight is the pork belly with braised red cabbage, mustard mash, and apple and brandy cream sauce. You can also indulge in the no-nonsense burger with chips, Chalmar sirloin steak, gnocchi with spinach and shimeji mushrooms, and seared, smoked trout with baby potatoes. On Sundays, the restaurant focuses on a smokehouse-inspired small-plate menu that changes often. Expect dishes like smoked short ribs, venison carpaccio, and brisket bao.

Pairing

The venue also offers cheese and charcuterie platters to accompany wine tastings, and there are dedicated pairing experiences with the farm’s specially cured biltongs or smoked cheeses.

Sunset Rouge Evenings at Alto Wine Estate

If you’re looking for a relaxed way to end your week, check out the Sunset Rouge evenings on Fridays. You can enjoy live music from local musicians, feast on platters or dishes from the menu, and sample wines by the glass or bottle while watching the sunset behind the Table Mountain horizon.

Staff and Service

The unfriendly dog reviews should encourage you to visit Alto Wine Estate. The staff is friendly and accommodating, and the wine tastings are exceptional. Reed, the sommelier, delivers an outstanding job, and Inga’s wine-tasting experience is a must-try. The venue is perfect for any occasion, and the service is top-notch. The atmosphere is non-commercial, and the views are breathtaking.
