According to Alderman Theresa Uys, the Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services, registering on the internship database can lead to job opportunities tailored to the applicant’s specific qualifications and skills. The ultimate goal is to equip individuals with the knowledge and work experience necessary to secure permanent employment.

Requirements for Registration
Applicants must provide digital copies of their ID, cover letter, qualifications, and any relevant references. After completing the online CV, applicants can search for internships on the City’s job search platform.
Programs Offered by the City
The City of Cape Town offers various programs to consider registered applicants for, including:
Graduate Internship Programme (GIP)
This program is tailored for students who have completed their qualifications at institutions of higher learning, such as universities or universities of technology. To qualify, applicants must possess a bachelor’s degree or postgraduate qualification in fields such as Civil, Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial Engineering, Urban and Regional Town Planning, Environmental Science, Materials Science, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Virology, Chemical Science, Chemistry, Atmospheric Science, Hydrogeology, Geographical Information System (GIS), Geochemistry, Hydrology, and Data Science.
Infrastructure Skills Development Grant (ISDG) Programme
The ISDG programme aims to prepare graduates for the professional world and expose them to various fields. Applicants for this program must be between the ages of 18 and 35 and possess specific qualifications in fields related to engineering, urban planning, environmental science, materials science, microbiology, biotechnology, virology, chemical science, chemistry, atmospheric science, hydrogeology, GIS, geochemistry, hydrology, and data science.
Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Programme
This program focuses on key learning areas related to geospatial analysis in the natural and built environment. Applicants must possess a Bacc, BTech (Honours), or Masters Degree in Geographical Information Systems, Geomatics, Geo-informatics, Geo-spatial Science, Data Science/Data informatics, Town Planning, or City and Regional Planning.
Skills Programme
The Skills program is aimed at individuals with Grade 10/11 or a National Senior Certificate (Grade 12)/ N1 – N5/ Level 2 – 4. This program provides practical exposure and structured practical learning opportunities and has a quarterly intake of candidates throughout the year.
Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Programme
This program integrates academic learning with workplace experience, where practical application is a requirement for obtaining a formal qualification. This work experience has specific learning outcomes and is formally known as in-service training.
