Three Major Phases of Sewer Pipe Replacement

The replacement and rehabilitation of sewer pipes in Uitsig are being implemented in three significant phases. Despite several challenges, including pipeline collapses, cable theft, and heavy winter rains, the first phase is near completion and is scheduled to finish in the first week of August.

Completed Work During First Phase

The initial phase of the sewer pipe replacement project includes various works such as rehabilitating and replacing the main collector sewers, upgrading the main sewer, and increasing the sewer line diameter. The completed work includes:

Rehabilitating and replacing the main collector sewers.
Upgrading the main sewer on Jacaranda Avenue, enhancing flow and capacity.
Increasing the sewer line diameter in Pansy Crescent.

Upgraded Sewer Network to Have More Capacity

The upgraded sewer network will have the capacity to convey more sewage, reducing the impact of blockages. However, the success of this initiative relies on the cooperation of local residents, who must maintain the new infrastructure.

Residents Urged to Preserve the Sewer System

The Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, Councillor Zahid Badroodien, has urged residents to dispose of waste responsibly and work towards preserving the sewer system. Household items, garden refuse, metal objects, car parts, cooking oil, fats, rags, and wet wipes can all cause blockages, leading to overflows.

Second and Third Phases of the Project

The second and third phases of the project will commence at the end of September and will involve the replacement and refurbishment of nearly 5,000 meters of sewer pipes in Uitsig, significantly improving the area’s sanitation and hygiene standards.
