Sewer pump stations are critical in ensuring the efficient transportation of wastewater to treatment plants, but they are often targeted by vandalism and theft, resulting in compromised community health and sewer overflows. To address this issue, the City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate has increased its investment in security measures to upgrade and refurbish sewer pump stations.

Importance of Sewer Pump Stations in Modern Cities

Sewer pump stations are essential facilities in modern cities that maintain the flow of wastewater to treatment plants, especially in areas where sewage must flow uphill. There are 487 sewer pump stations in Cape Town, making up an extensive sewer system that spans 9,266km of sewer pipes and 23 wastewater treatment works.

The City’s Investment Strategy

The City plans to invest R123 million in upgrading and refurbishing sewer pump stations across Cape Town in the next financial year. This plan includes 10 routine pump station upgrades and a Pump Station Security Upgrade program that will benefit 39 sites by implementing improved security measures such as CCTV cameras, reinforced steel doors, concrete walls, and security personnel.

Increasing Vulnerability to Vandalism and Theft

Sewer pump stations have become increasingly vulnerable to vandalism and theft, leading to operational issues and sewer spills that negatively impact communities. To address this growing problem, the directorate has been steadily increasing its investment in security measures. Between July 2021 and June 2022, R43 million was spent to upgrade and repair 33 vandalized sewer pump stations. In the past financial year ending June 2023, that amount rose to R70 million, which was allocated for security upgrades at 39 stations in various locations.

City’s Call to Action

The City is urging residents to assist in protecting this essential infrastructure by reporting vandalism and theft incidents, offering rewards of up to R5,000 for information leading to arrests or recovery of stolen property. Residents can report theft or vandalism by calling 0800 11 00 77 or reporting through various channels such as WhatsApp, online forms, email, SMS, or by visiting a City walk-in center.

Sewer pump stations are vital facilities in modern cities that require protection against vandalism and theft to prevent operational issues that can lead to sewer spills and compromised community health. The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate is committed to enhancing its investment in security measures to upgrade and refurbish sewer pump stations across Cape Town. Residents are encouraged to play their part in protecting this essential infrastructure by reporting incidents of theft and vandalism.
