If Nche cannot participate, Thomas du Toit may be promoted from the bench to the starting lineup. Steven Kitshoff, who was scheduled to travel to New Zealand on Tuesday, could be named on the bench to face the Wallabies. Erasmus noted that “Kitsie will stay behind until we’ve got 100% clearance. If Ox is out with his pec muscle, then Kitsie will come into the team.”

The Springboks’ coaching staff has been adjusting its plans in response to Nche’s uncertain status. Jacques Nienaber, Springbok coach, revealed that the prop’s participation in the opening Rugby Championship match on Saturday was in doubt. Steven Kitshoff’s departure for New Zealand has been postponed, and he will remain in South Africa as injury cover until further notice.
