North West Provincial Executive Committee Meeting: Addressing Challenges and Seeking Growth Opportunities

The North West Provincial Executive Council (EXCO) recently held a meeting in Klerksdorp to discuss pressing issues and find opportunities for growth. Premier Bushy Maape, who is currently recovering at home, was wished a speedy recovery as his presence is crucial for decision-making in the province.

Solutions for Unemployment

One of the primary concerns discussed was the unemployment rate of 53 percent in the North West Province. The provincial government is collaborating with stakeholders to devise strategies to alleviate this issue. The recent BRICS Summit decisions were acknowledged as essential for both the province and the country. Potential investors were approached to explore investment opportunities in the North West Province, with positive responses indicating their willingness to invest in roads and agriculture. A dinner session with these investors will be held on September 15, 2023, to further discuss possible investments.

Addressing Gender-Based Violence

As women’s month draws to a close, the EXCO emphasized the need to address Gender-Based Violence and Femicide. Acting Premier Nono Maloyi has been tasked to lead efforts against this social pandemic. The council commended the recently held Provincial Women’s Day event in the JB Marks Local Municipality, which was attended by thousands of women.

Improving Service Delivery

The EXCO reiterated its commitment to resolving service delivery challenges faced by communities across the province, with the Accelerated Service Delivery initiative, “Thuntsha Lerole,” launched in the Mamusa Local Municipality. The council also addressed the issue of veldfires, which have negatively impacted the agricultural sector. They applauded the proactiveness of MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Ms. Desbo Mohono, who visited the affected areas to assess the damage.

Condemning Pilanesberg Airport Burning

The burning of the Pilanesberg airport, an unfortunate incident, was condemned by the EXCO. It was particularly disheartening as Chinese investors had expressed interest in revamping the facility.

Addressing Sewage Spillage

The council also deliberated on the sewage spillage in Mahikeng, affecting the communities of Seweding and Ramosadi. A mobile clinic has been stationed in the area to address this situation. Acting Premier Maloyi directed the Ngaka Modiri Molema District and Mahikeng Local Municipality Executive Mayors to intervene urgently. The Development Bank of Southern Africa was consulted to determine how it could help address infrastructure challenges and provide a permanent solution to the sewage spillage issue.

Blacklisting Contractors

In regard to contractors who failed to deliver on their contractual obligations, the EXCO resolved to blacklist them.

Enhancing Learner Performance

The council was pleased with the improvement in learner performance across grades 1 to 12 compared to the previous year. It was further resolved that each EXCO member would adopt an underperforming school to support ongoing efforts to enhance learner performance in the North West Province.
